Last week was full of color at the Stephen Burrows event at the Museum of the City of New York. The event, sponsored by Target was to kick off a new exhibit, which honors the fashion legend’s impact on the fashion industry and on society. We love all of the bright, funky colors and shapes! Yet again we are honored to have been asked to help bring to life the design concepts of Nicky Balestrieri at Extra Extra Creative. Can’t wait for the next one!
We love when we get to do non-traditional wedding backdrops! Day 49 on The Knot’s 100 Days of Inspiration featured our paper chain ceremony backdrop, perfect for a couple who own a company called Paper Chain Productions!
“Paper chains get a serious sophisticated upgrade without losing their playful charm in this ceremony backdrop created by Barb Salzman, founder of Hatch Creative Studio. The paper chain garlands framed the the couple’s vows in this chic loft-inspired space without blocking the natural light from the oversized windows as a wedding arch or fabric draping would have.
The best part about paper chains? They’re an easy DIY and completely customizable. You can buy pre-made paper chains at LoxSavvy.com in a variety of colors in prints, or if you’re the crafty WikiHow.com has a step-by-step tutorial. The key to pulling off the look is quantity and variety. By mixing and matching length, color, and size of paper chains, Barb created a luxe modern look from this time-tested party decoration.”

“Feathers add a whimsical touch to a floral arrangement, and for this bride feathers had even greater significance because after her wedding she would adopt the last name, Bird. For this winter wedding, Barb Salzman of Hatch Creative Studio walked the line between creating a bouquet that looked too springy, while also avoiding the drab look of winter. By incorporating flowers like ranunculus, succulents, hydrangea, veronica, seeded eucalyptus, anemone, nigella, yellow button mum, and silver brunia Barb complemented wintry ingredients with a nod of spring to come.” Read the full post on The Knot Blog and see more photos from this wedding on the Hatch Website!

Day 29 on The Knot’s 100 Days of Inspiration showcased our faux grass aisle runner. Who says you can’t walk barefoot in NYC?!
“For a self-proclaimed “hippie” bride who wanted to walk barefoot down the aisle, Barb Salzman rolled out the green carpet with an aisle runner made of faux grass. Barb added bright sunflowers and wildflowers along the sides of the aisle to create a whimsical, organic look — and constructed the ceremony arch and entrance out of simple tree branches.” Read the full post here.
With a month into the new year, the Hatch team is gearing up to take on 2013. Here is a round up of a selection of bouquets from 2012, Hatch style. We’ve loved the look of all our brides’ bouquets this past year and can’t wait to see what beautiful flowers this new year has in store. Plus, nothing like a post of cheerful flowers to brighten up those dreadful February blues!
“For a family-oriented wedding Barb Salzman, founder of Hatch Creative Studio, created this 3D family tree representing several generations of the couples’ families. “The whole wedding was about family and the stories,” says Barb, so the tree was the perfect way to incorporate the family members into the day. Barb carried the tree theme throughout the decor, even incorporating oversized trees into the centerpieces for an earthy look.” Read the full post on The Knot blog!
This week Barb has been in Aspen, Colorado for the X-games! Office Depot was a sponsor of this year’s event so Hatch designed a lodge inspired lounge for their booth at the games. Today kicks off the first day of the games and the reveal of the Office Depot Lounge! For any of you at the games, stop by the booth to charge your phone in the charging station and try out all the nifty tablets, headphones, and computers on display. Stay up to date with what’s happening at the booth and the X-games with #odxgames. A huge thanks to our partners who we definitely couldn’t do this without. Thanks Eventage for producing such a great event and giving us this incredible opportunity and to Reuben Negron for his incredible rendering and design skills. Yet again…everyone is saying, “It looks just like the rendering.”
Take a look below for the before and after of the booth.
Good luck to all of the athletes competing!
“To create a custom retro touch, Barb Salzman transformed simple votive candle holders into stunning vintage photo displays using old slide projector photos. The groom from this wedding was actually an art historian with a focus on lighting, which made it all the more meaningful.
Don’t have any cool retro items laying around? Every weekend Barb travels to flea markets and vintage sales hunting for pieces to repurpose into unique decor. If you’re not so adventurous, you can even rent found objects and items from Hatch Creative Studio’s Prop Shop, or search Etsy.com, for interesting vintage table decor.”

Exciting news in the Hatch studio today! Barb just got voted in the top 10 most inspiring people in weddings by The Knot. We are so excited to be contributing to their “100 Days of Inspiration” on their blog! Yesterday was “Day 1“, featuring our fun animal topiaries at The Pierre! Huge thanks to Ellen at Sidekick Events for being such a great planner at this wedding and Dave Robbins for being the best animal topiary photographer around! Read the full post on the The Knot Blog!
“To kick off our 100 days of inspiration, we’re starting with these cute creations: animal-shaped topiaries created by Barb Salzman at Hatch Creative Studio. The green monkey (yep, you read that right!), rabbit and elephant were made entirely out of moss — and added a playful vibe to an otherwise elegant escort card table.”
“While the overall design of the wedding created with flowers, candles, and textures creates the general feel of the event, it’s the details that make it personal and unique to each couple,” Barb explains. The animal topiary “shows a deeper glimpse into our couples and the sense of humor that most of our clients have.”
Today the Style Me Pretty Weddings Book hit the stands and we are so excited to have been featured in it! Erica and Steven’s wedding, photographed by Erik Ekroth, starts on page 156 under the appropriate Hatch category: Antique Chic! The book is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and would make a great Holiday gift for any bride-to-be! Take a look here at our website for more photos from their wedding!
We have some exciting news! Last month we installed a window at Rockefeller Center to showcase the Light of Life Foundation’s campaign against thyroid cancer. The Light of Life Foundation‘s mission is to improve the quality of life of thyroid cancer patients by educating the public and promoting development to improve thyroid cancer care. The window was inspired by their “Check Your Neck” ad campaign. The EHE International window changes monthly, and is always dedicated to nonprofit organizations. Yesterday, the New York Times wrote an article about the EHE International window and featured the Light of Life Foundation window! Read the full article here. We love being a part of such an important organization! Don’t forget to “Check Your Neck“!

Decorating for the Holidays doesn’t have to be limited to garland, snow globes, and figurines. Whether it’s for your home or for a Holiday party, spice up your decor this year the Hatch way!
First, let’s start with the walls. Lean birch poles against the wall and layer in wintery elements, such as snowflakes and snowballs, to begin the transformation into a winter wonderland.
Wrapping objects in a soft knit fabric can take any ordinary item and make it Holiday appropriate. Wrap different wintery knits around candle holders or use it as wrapping paper for that “Secret Santa” gift.
Try this unique twist on a snow globe – fill various clear bottles with fake snow and hang them from a birch pole. Attach a tag with you and your friend’s favorite skiing mountains to each bottle.
If you are looking for less DIY options, we have some great winter props ready to attend any Holiday party such as vintage snowshoes, silver mercury glass, and a rustic sled!
If you are looking for a custom Holiday floral, we are happy to create whatever you can imagine. Check out our floral snowman – this Frosty won’t melt!
We are always doing handmade personal details for weddings, but it turns out that many of these projects translate into great Holiday gifts! Take these custom stamps for example. We created personalized stamps for each guest that the bride used to address her save-the-dates, invites, and also as escort cards at the wedding. But how cute would a personalized stamp be as a gift for the Holidays? And don’t forget to address the envelope with it! Let us know if you want help in creating this gift for all of your Holiday correspondences!
Have we mentioned lately how much we love Blue Hill at Stone Barns! Lin and Steve’s wedding had so many personal details that made this day extra special! We especially loved their use of Zodiac signs, which were incorporated throughout the wedding, from topiaries to cake toppers. Thanks to Erik Ekroth for capturing all the details!
From Little Owl, to Glasshouses, to Liberty Warehouse, to Skylight West, Hatch was all over New York last week! We had a great time working with everyone involved!
Check out one of the rooms at Taylor Swift’s album release party for Target at Skylight West. The listening station was really fun!
